Humans have impacted the environment in many ways: overpopulation, pollution, burning fossil fuels, and deforestation. Changes like these have triggered climate change, poor air quality, loss of biodiversity, soil erosion and water stress.
In order to meet the ambitious target of the Paris Agreement limiting global warming to 1.5C which has been requested by the IPCC’s special report, decarbonisation rates must reach 11.3% annually. That is seven times greater than the current rate, which has even slowed in 2018.
In that context “business as usual” is not an option and we become increasingly aware that disruptive changes are required in all sectors to give our societies a fair chance of avoiding irreversible changes to our ecosystems and catastrophic social and economic consequences.
Humans are an integral part of the environment. Humans influence and are influenced by the environment. Indeed humans cannot live or carry out social or productive activities in separation from the environment in which they exist. The issue is what kind of relationship humans should have with their environment. We need to realize the need for humans to share the earth with other forms of life and build an earth ecosystem based on coexistence and not on destruction.
We take inspiration on the Fibonacci sequence, after the Italian mathematician, which appears in nature in a fascinating way and reflects natural patterns such as branching in trees, the arrangement of leaves on a stem, a hurricane pattern, a sea wave. Fibonacci numbers appear in nature often enough to prove that they reflect some naturally occurring patterns.
